October 29, 2026
Where does a November Saturday in Rock Creek Park start when the building on Glover Road has been locked since spring? The Nature Center and Planetarium has been closed since April 8, 2026, "until further notice due to continued remediation," according to the National Park Service. It's not the only indoor or lease-run spot in the park that's quiet this month.
Take stock of the park's fixed facilities and a pattern shows up. Most of them are closed, paused or open only a few weekend hours. The park is still busy in November, though. The calendar has moved outdoors to ranger-led hikes and rambles, a stitch circle at Peirce Mill and Saturday-morning volunteer crews at the park's edges. If you live in Cleveland Park, Forest Hills, Crestwood or Chevy Chase DC, this month comes down to knowing which trailhead to show up at and when.
Taken together, they leave very little indoor space in the park this month.
| Place | Status for November 2026 | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nature Center and Planetarium | Closed until further notice | Ongoing remediation since April 8, 2026 |
| Rock Creek Tennis Center | Activities paused | New lease still being negotiated |
| Peirce Mill | Weekends only, shorter hours | Milling season ended in October |
| Rock Creek Park Golf Course | Renovation paused since May 2026 | Construction expected to resume, no date set |
The Tennis Center sits in its own limbo. The park's alerts page says activities there "are currently paused as negotiations for a new lease continue," and that the park hopes "to share an update soon."
Peirce Mill is open but different. The Friends of Peirce Mill say milling season runs April to October. Starting Sunday, November 1, the mill is open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. The NPS Peirce Mill page lists weekend hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for November and December, subject to staffing. It also lists the mill as closed on Veterans Day, November 11, and Thanksgiving, November 26. The two sources disagree by two hours, so a late-morning visit could hit a locked door. Plan for after noon to be safe.
The golf course is the hardest to pin down. National Links Trust says that "as of May 2026, this project is temporarily paused" and "will be resuming soon." The trust's May 8 statement said an agreement with the Interior Department "clears the path" to restart construction. Planned work includes a new clubhouse, a driving range and course restoration. In the meantime, PlayDC's Rock Creek course page says the course is open for the season with the back nine closed and a five-hole loop using holes 10, 11, 15, 17 and 18. That page was posted in May, so call before you bring your clubs.
With the buildings closed, the park's programming now meets on trails, at Peirce Mill and in the smaller sites Rock Creek Park manages across the city. The NPS Rock Creek Park calendar for the first half of November reads like a walking schedule.
Fall color is the headliner. A Fall Leaves in Rock Creek Park hike is set for Saturday, November 7, at 3 p.m., the last one on the calendar after a weekday-morning hike on November 5. If you've been meaning to walk the woods with someone who can name what you're passing, that Saturday afternoon is the chance.
Here's how the rest lines up, weekend by weekend:
One listing doesn't match the building it names. The November 6 session is titled "Books and Beyond with a Ranger at the Nature Center," but NPS says that building is closed and points visitors to the calendar for location changes. Before you bring small children to Glover Road on the 6th, confirm the meeting spot with the park.
The Civil War Defenses of Washington programs run every week as well. Heroes Remembered: Stories from Battleground National Cemetery meets Wednesdays at 11 a.m., including Veterans Day, November 11.
The park's nonprofit partner is scheduling outdoors too, at sites along the park's eastern side. Rock Creek Conservancy lists three NPS-partnered sessions this month, each running 10 a.m. to noon:
Details and sign-up are on the Fort Slocum and Carter Barron event pages. The Conservancy and park sessions fit together on the same day. On November 7, the Fort Slocum session wraps two hours before a ranger ramble and three hours before the Fall Leaves hike.
An outdoor month means road and trail conditions matter more than usual. Here's where things stand as of late October on the park's alerts page.
Upper Beach Drive stays car-free. It's closed to motor vehicles year-round except for two scenic driving days, and the fall one was October 24. No November driving day is listed, so the upper drive belongs to walkers and riders all month.
Waterside Drive has no new closure date. NPS postponed the planned closure after crews found a large early-1900s utility line during preliminary excavation. The park says the team is evaluating the line "to determine necessary steps before work can safely proceed." WTOP reported that NPS would announce replacement dates once that evaluation was done. If you take Waterside between Rock Creek Parkway and Massachusetts Avenue, check the alerts page before you drive.
The southern Glover Archbold Trail is detoured. That end of the trail is under an emergency closure until further notice because of aerial hazards. The posted detour runs along Foxhall Road, 44th Street and P Street NW.
Meridian Hill's upper lawn reopens after November 9. The upper-level grass panels are fenced for restoration from October 13 through November 9, 2026. The upper plaza and the rest of the park stay open. That means the November 8 Mobilizing Memories program meets in a park whose lawn is still fenced.
Parkland near Georgetown is closed into next summer. Parkland east of Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, between Pennsylvania Avenue and O Street NW, is fully closed from early June 2026 through June 30, 2027, while DC Water repairs the Rock Creek Main Interceptor.
The Rock Creek Trail rebuild is done. DDOT's Rock Creek Trail project page says the work was substantially completed in winter 2024. It includes a new 110-foot pedestrian bridge south of the Beach Drive tunnel at the Zoo. The park's trail alerts currently list only the Glover Archbold detour, with nothing posted for the Rock Creek Trail.
With the Nature Center still closed, a ranger hike or a two-hour volunteer shift is the easiest way into the park this month. The NPS calendar also has a sign-up for its monthly newsletter, and park neighbors can ask to join a separate list for project updates and public meetings.
