While some of us have already started welcoming the fall season by lugging out our fall décor and getting our hands on pumpkin-flavored everything, the true beginning of the fall season, or autumnal equinox as it is commonly referred to, starts on September 22nd. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the autumnal equinox is “the astronomical start of the fall season in the Northern Hemisphere and of the spring season in the Southern Hemisphere….During the equinox, the Sun crosses what we call the “celestial equator”—an imaginary extension of Earth’s equator line into space. The equinox occurs precisely when the Sun’s center passes through this line. When the Sun crosses the equator from north to south, this marks the autumnal equinox”.
Another bit of information we learned about this time of year from the article referenced above is that the leaves change color, not because of the change in weather conditions that are usually associated with the fall season, but because of the time and amount of sunlight and photosynthesis. If interested, you can learn more about this process in-depth here.
There is something magical about the leaves changing color. All of the vibrant hues, especially on a gorgeous, sunny day can really take your breath away. Living in the DMV we are given ample opportunity to enjoy this yearly phenomenon in a multitude of state parks, scenic overlooks and other picturesque locations near and far.
